Badger, Orestes (1791 or 1792 - 13 Oct 1850) Established the Fly Creek Foundry and Machine Shop in 1828 — where Henry and Silas began manufacturing hammers sometime before 1854.
Burrell, Edward Jonathan (20 May 1845 - 11 Jan 1935) Director of the company 1920-1925. Briefly served as President of the company following the deaths of D.J. Williams and J.J. Gilbert.
Cheney, Henry (12 Jan 1821 - 13 Mar 1878) Namesake of the company. Granted U.S. Patents 66,298 (2 Jul 1867) and 116,553 (4 Jul 1871). Simultaneously owned and operated three manufacturing concerns in Little Falls producing axes, furniture, and hammers. His motto was “ne plus ultra.”
Cheney, Robert Alva (3 Aug 1853 - 23 Apr 1927) Second son of Henry. Served as Administrator of Henry’s estate. Supervisor and Trustee of the company. At some point between 1881 and 1893 he moved to New Britain, Connecticut where he continued to make hammers, most likely for the Stanley Rule and Level company.
Gilbert, Joshua Judson (1862 - 12 Jan 1925) Son of the founder of the Gilbert Knitting Company. Trustee of George Waterman’s estate. Director of the company 1917-1925.
Hardin, George Anson (17 Aug 1832 - 16 Apr 1901) New York Supreme Court Judge involved in the organization of the company following Henry’s death. Served as Trustee of the company until selling his 44 shares to George Waterman in December 1892.
Hose, Titus Sheard (20 Mar 1890 - 24 Nov 1948) Grandson of the honorable Titus Sheard — founder of the Little Falls Knitting Company. Step-son of D.J. Williams. Secretary of the company 1917-1925. Applied for two patents two months before the company was sold to the Prentiss Vise Company. Those patents 1,548,603 and 1,550,962 where granted August 4th and 25th, respectively — two months after the sale of the company.
Ingham, Schuyler R. (2 Jan 1830 - 6 Feb 1919) Son of William, involved in the organization of the company following Henry’s death. Initially served as Trustee of the company, then assumed Presidency following the death of William Wheeler. He retired in 1899 leaving the company to his nephew George Waterman.
Ingham, William (12 Oct 1794 - 10 Jan 1891) The previous owner of the Fulling and Carding Mill where Henry and Silas established their hammer factory in Little Falls, NY. The company would remain at this site for just over a century.
Jones, Sheldon Frederick (25 Aug 1849 - 3 Aug 1932) Henry’s son-in-law. Married Eunice Marie Cheney on February 22, 1869. Became bookkeeper and salesman for Jacob Moll’s furniture business in 1872. In January 1878 he moved to NYC to establish a sales office. In April 1878 he returned to Little Falls to oversee Henry’s estate’s books. The axe and furniture businesses were liquidated and he remained with the hammer company until 1883.
LeRow, Silas W. (8 Jun 1819 - 29 Dec 1863) Henry’s nearly forgotten business partner.
Mulford, John E. (26 Feb 1829 - 18 Oct 1908) Brevet Brigadier General appointed by Abraham Lincoln. He was responsible for overseeing prisoner of war exchanges during the Civil War. In 1877 he organized the Prentiss Vise Company with his son Edwin.
Mulford, Edwin H. (5 Nov 1854 - 23 Aug 1945) Son of John E., President of the Prentiss Vise Company, which purchased the Henry Cheney Hammer Company on June 23, 1925.
Mulford, Elmer Sidway (8 Nov 1890 - 2 Oct 1977) Son of Edwin H., Secretary and Treasurer of the Henry Cheney Hammer Company. He lived in Little Falls and ran the company until it ceased operations on July 2, 1954.
Waterman, George Dean (1855 - 28 Sep 1916) Grandson of William Ingham, nephew of Schuyler Ingham. First Secretary and Treasurer of the company. Left in 1887, returned 1890. Acquired 44 shares from Judge Hardin in 1892. Took over the company when his Uncle retired in 1899. Responsible for the 1904 catalog.
Wheeler, Charles Volney (1850 - 1918) Son of William T. Wheeler. Served as Trustee of the company at the turn of the century.
Wheeler, William T. (1820 - 3 Jan 1885) First President of the company following Henry’s death. Also served as Administrator of Henry’s estate.
Williams, David Jenkins (1 Apr 1859 - 13 Nov 1924) Best friend of J.J. Gilbert. Vice President of the Gilbert Knitting Company. Husband of Edith Sheard — widowed daughter of the founder of the Little Falls Knitting Company. Step-father of T.S. Hose. Served as President of the company 1917-1924.
