The Original Cheney Nailer Sales Maker

The Cheney Sales Maker is a real sales producer, built with the conviction that if people will try a good thing once, they will buy it. This demonstrator display is doing a fine selling job in prominent stores everywhere. Let your customers try the Cheney “Nail–Holder.”

The Sales Maker is attractive. It is made of wood, varnished, and has a two-colored target printed on it. The size is 12x15x3 inches high. There are rubber feet to protect your counter and deaden noise. An attractive four-color sign is included, as is the chain for securing the Cheney Nailer.

Sales Makers are furnished only with order for 12 hammers, and cannot be shipped except as packed complete with hammer stock. You pay only for the hammers furnished, no charge for Sales Maker.

The Original Cheney Catalog Listing

The image and text above are an attempt to recreate the actual listing in catalog No. 25 (1942-43) — which is available for viewing at the Little Falls Historical Society museum, at the corner of Ann and Albany Streets in Little Falls, New York.

Below is a closer look at the “attractive four-color sign” included with the Cheney Sales Maker.

1936 Wholesale Catalog Advertisement

Obviously aimed at hardware dealers, this advertisement touts the Cheney Nailer and the effectiveness of the “Sales Maker” retail display demonstrator.

October 1938 Hardware Age Magazine

Another advertisement, thanks to Gristmill contributor Bill Warner, aimed at hardware dealers touting the effectiveness of the “Sales Maker” retail display demonstrator.

THE NEW CHENEY NAILER DEMONSTRATOR

A NEW DISPLAY THAT SELLS * *

This display is made of wood, the colored bull’s eye serves as a target for customers to try out the Cheney Nailer, driving nails, as in actual work, into the top of the display. In the Junior Demonstrator package are six Cheney Nailers, with one attached to the display for demonstrating. A full color sign, readily placed in position, is also included.

This special display is of particular advantage to stores whose hammer stocks and sales have been small and those stores that have yet to carry the Cheney Nailer, in providing a means to secure additional hammer business with minimum size stock.

(1) Demonstrator

Silver King Sales Maker

Evidence suggests that the Silver King Cheney Nailer was introduced in 1941. It is the “Ne Plus Ultra” of carpenters’ hammers. Beautifully shaped and finished. Perfectly balanced and tempered. Unique, easy to use, virtually maintenance-free, ball-bearing nail-holding feature. Second-growth white hickory handle.

The advertisement below featuring Superintendent, Frank Bostner, appears to be a replacement for the “attractive four-color sign” included with the Sales Maker. Undoubtedly it was packed with a full compliment of No. 958 “Pride of the Tool Chest” 16 oz. Silver King Cheney Nailers.

Here is the two-sided “folder” included with the Silver King Cheney Nailer. Given the claims of “World’s Standard Since 1836” and made by “expert craftsmen with a background of 115 years of experience in the manufacture of fine hammers”, this must have been published circa 1951.

Which do you suppose came first, the cartoon character or Frank Bostner in hat and tie, with his sleeves rolled up, taking a wicked back-swing?
